In a somber moment for the Christian community, Rev Dr Uma Ukpai, a towering figure in Nigerian evangelism, has passed away.
Rev Ukpai, born January 7, 1945, in Asaga Ohafia, Abia State, was widely known as the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association. Over the decades, he became a household name, ministering across Nigeria and beyond, pioneering cross-denominational crusades and investing heavily in education and healthcare in underserved regions.
Rev Ukpai’s ministry stood out for its emphasis on unity. His Greater Lagos Crusade for Christ initiative is credited with helping pave the way for the formation of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria in 1985, fostering collaboration among Pentecostal churches.
Beyond pulpit ministry, he left a lasting legacy through institutions he founded. These include hospitals, Bible schools, a polytechnic, and various vocational training initiatives that empowered young people and underserved communities. He also supported rural healthcare and education.
His philanthropic work extended to health outreach. For his 80th birthday, he expanded rural eye care services and helped perform laser cataract surgeries for people in need, an act that drew praise from many.
Statements have begun pouring in from across the country. Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God said Rev Ukpai was a source of inspiration, especially in times of personal loss. Many other church and civil leaders are expected to share tributes in the coming days.
Official funeral arrangements have not yet been released, but his burial is expected to attract national attention with participation from religious and community leaders across Nigeria.
Rev Dr Uma Ukpai will be remembered for the lives he touched, the unity he championed, and the institutions he built. His legacy lives on.
May his soul rest in peace.
