In a decisive move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national security, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major reshuffle of the country’s top military leadership. The appointments take effect immediately, with new leaders assuming command of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Defence Staff.
The changes are part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to address persistent security challenges across the nation, including insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, and separatist activities in the southeast.
New appointments include General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu has been appointed Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
In a related development, President Tinubu also appointed new heads for Nigeria’s intelligence agencies. Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed has been named Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, while Mr Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi will lead the Department of State Services. These appointments are part of a broader effort to improve intelligence gathering and operational efficiency in tackling security threats nationwide.
Government sources stated that the reshuffle is intended to inject professionalism, vigilance, and renewed leadership into the military hierarchy, ensuring that the armed forces are better positioned to protect the country and its citizens.
Analysts suggest that the shake-up reflects the administration’s urgency in responding to escalating security challenges and may signal a broader strategy to reform Nigeria’s defense and intelligence structure.
