Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu, former Chief of Staff to the Abia State Government and younger brother to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has reportedly rejoined the All Progressives Congress, APC, and declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election.
Mascot Uzor Kalu, who previously contested the 2023 governorship election under the Action Peoples Party, APP, was said to have announced his return to the APC during a stakeholders meeting in Umuahia. According to sources close to him, his decision was driven by the desire to reunite with his political base and strengthen the progressive movement in Abia State ahead of the next election.
In his remarks, Mascot expressed confidence in his ability to defeat the incumbent governor, Dr Alex Otti, stating that Abia needs a new direction built on economic growth, youth empowerment, and improved governance. He emphasized his commitment to building a state where development projects and opportunities reach every community.
Political observers in Abia see Kalu’s return to the APC as a significant development that could alter the political landscape of the state. His renewed alliance with the APC may also rekindle cooperation with other influential figures within the party, including his brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation from the Abia State chapter of the APC or from Mascot Uzor Kalu himself regarding the reported declaration. However, discussions within party circles suggest that consultations are ongoing and that an official announcement may follow soon.
If confirmed, Mascot Uzor Kalu’s rejoining of the APC and his 2027 governorship ambition could set the stage for a major political contest between the APC and the ruling Labour Party in Abia State.
