In the ongoing constitutional review by Nigeria’s National Assembly, the Southeast geopolitical zone may soon gain an additional state — a move that would finally place the region on equal footing with others across the federation.
Amid the discussions and resolutions reached by the joint chambers of the National Assembly, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emerged as a central figure credited with driving the proposal forward.
Activists and stakeholders from the Southeast have praised Kalu for his relentless advocacy and political skill in ensuring that the long-standing demand for equity and balance in Nigeria’s state structure was given serious legislative attention.
A prominent activist, OluImo, lauded Kalu’s role, describing him as “the Moses of Ndigbo who has divided the Red Sea of marginalization and inequality.” He noted that through Kalu’s commitment and persistent engagement, the Southeast is now on the verge of achieving parity with other regions — a milestone that many consider historic.
“For years, the Southeast has cried out over structural imbalance,” OluImo said. “Now, through Hon. Kalu’s bridge-building politics and unyielding spirit, that cry is finding a lasting answer. His efforts have not only brought hope to our people but also strengthened Nigeria’s unity through fairness and inclusion.”
Kalu, known for his bridge-building initiatives and bipartisan approach in the House, has consistently emphasized that national unity can only be sustained through justice, equity, and fair representation. His leadership in the constitutional review process reflects a broader vision of ensuring that all regions have equal opportunities in governance and development.
Political observers note that if the proposal succeeds, it would mark a major step in correcting historical imbalances and reaffirming the Southeast’s place in the Nigerian federation.
As debates continue and the bill moves through the legislative process, many Nigerians — particularly in the Southeast — view this moment as a turning point in the nation’s democratic evolution, with Benjamin Kalu standing as a symbol of persistence, courage, and visionary leadership.
