The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of the newly nominated service chiefs following their screening and deliberations at the Committee of the Whole. The confirmation came after a voice vote conducted by the lawmakers and announced by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The newly confirmed service chiefs are Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.

Senate President Akpabio, while announcing the confirmation, commended the nominees for their distinguished careers and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the President and the Nigerian people. He emphasized the importance of professionalism, discipline, and commitment in addressing the country’s security challenges.

The confirmation of the new service chiefs marks a significant step in the administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national security and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. The newly appointed officers are expected to bring renewed vigor and strategic direction to Nigeria’s defence architecture, especially in tackling insurgency, banditry, and other security threats across the country.
