Opposition Suppression Endangers Democracy, Peter Obi Warns Federal Government

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has warned that the growing suppression of opposition voices by the Federal Government poses a serious danger to Nigeria’s democratic stability. He said that placing party interests above national security undermines the very foundations of the country’s political system.

Obi noted that Nigeria is currently facing widening security challenges—ranging from insurgency and kidnapping to bandit attacks and communal violence—yet government attention appears increasingly directed toward restricting political rivals rather than addressing threats to public safety. He argued that no country can achieve progress when its leaders prioritize political control over the protection of citizens.

He cautioned that democracy thrives only when all political actors have the freedom to express their views, participate without fear, and hold the government accountable. According to him, when dissenting voices are intimidated or sidelined, democratic institutions weaken and the nation risks drifting toward authoritarian tendencies.

Obi urged the government to shift its focus back to strengthening security agencies, improving intelligence operations, and fostering public confidence in the system. He said national interest must always take precedence over party considerations if Nigeria is to maintain stability and safeguard its future.

He also called on civil society organizations, community leaders, and citizens to remain vigilant in defending democratic values, noting that an inclusive political environment is essential for peace, unity, and sustainable development.
