The Gombe State Police Command has dismissed widespread social media reports claiming that an ECWA church in the state was attacked and that worshippers were abducted. The rumour, which spread quickly online on Sunday, created concern among residents and church members.
According to the police, no attack took place. Public Relations Officer DSP Buhari Abdullahi described the circulating story as fake and misleading. He urged the public to stop sharing unverified information that could cause fear and confusion. He added that senior police officers were already at the church from 6.00 am and confirmed that the area was calm and peaceful.
The police spokesperson stated that the reports of an attack and mass abduction were completely false. He encouraged citizens to rely on official information and allow security agencies to provide accurate updates when needed.
The rumour surfaced at a time when security concerns remain high in some parts of Nigeria, especially following earlier isolated incidents involving religious leaders. However, the police stressed that the latest claim has no connection to any recent verified event.
Authorities have called on the public to be cautious when sharing information online and to report genuine suspicious activities directly to the police instead of spreading unconfirmed social media posts.
