The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), Imo State Chapter, led by Barr Chidubem Uzodinma Ekwelem, the State Chairman, paid a courtesy visit to Senator Patrick Ndubueze, representing Imo North Senatorial District (Okigwe Zone), on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in Owerri. The visit, organized by the Executive Members of the association, aimed to strengthen collaboration between the lawmaker and persons living with disabilities in the state.

During the meeting, Comr Ekwelem, speaking on behalf of the group, expressed appreciation for Senator Ndubueze’s leadership and legislative achievements. He highlighted the senator’s role in supporting development projects in the region, including the recent establishment of the Federal University in Okigwe, which has been a major milestone for education and socio-economic growth in the zone.

Comr Ekwelem praised the senator for being a consistent voice for the people, not only of Okigwe Zone but for all residents of Imo State. He assured that the association would continue to support the senator in his legislative agenda and political engagements, particularly with the 2027 elections approaching.

The Imo State Chairman also noted the importance of inclusion and representation for persons living with disabilities, mentioning that JONAPWD has been closely monitoring policies and legislation that affect their welfare. The association highlighted the need for lawmakers to consider the group’s interests in national and state-level decision-making.

In his response, Senator Ndubueze expressed gratitude for the visit and for the recognition of his efforts. He promised to involve the association in initiatives that promote the welfare of persons with disabilities.

He asked the group to submit a formal proposal to the National Assembly seeking a change in nomenclature from “Persons Living With Disabilities” to “Special Citizens,” explaining that the change would promote dignity and respect and better reflect their contributions to society.

To show support, Senator Ndubueze also said he would consider engaging a member of JONAPWD as a Special Aide in his office at the National Assembly, providing an opportunity for direct participation in governance and advocacy for persons with disabilities.

The meeting also offered a chance to discuss ongoing challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Imo State, including access to education, employment, and healthcare. Both the senator and the association agreed on the need for collaboration between government agencies and advocacy groups to create inclusive policies and programs that empower special citizens.

The courtesy visit concluded positively, strengthening the relationship between the lawmaker and JONAPWD and highlighting a shared commitment to ensuring that persons living with disabilities are fully included in national development and given the recognition they deserve.
