Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to the All Progressives Congress National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, over what he described as unwarranted interference in Rivers State politics.
Speaking during a visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area in Rivers State, Wike emphasized that national party officials have no business meddling in the states political affairs. He warned that anyone attempting to interfere would face serious consequences, saying that they should stay out of Rivers politics and learn from what happened to others who tried before them.
The confrontation comes after comments by some APC officials that Wike perceived as provocative toward Rivers States leadership.
The FCT Minister, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party, made it clear that Rivers State remains a politically sensitive area and cautioned against taking the states support for granted, especially in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
Wikes statement underscores the growing tension between the PDP and the ruling APC, particularly regarding Governor Siminalayi Fubaras recent political maneuvers. Analysts say the warning reflects Wikes determination to maintain influence in his home state and assert the PDPs dominance in Rivers ahead of upcoming elections.
Political observers describe Wikes public admonition as unusual, highlighting the rare instance of a federal cabinet minister openly challenging a senior ruling party official to refrain from commenting on state-level politics.
The message also signals that the political battle lines in Rivers State are being sharply drawn well before the next election cycle.
