Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has successfully reached an agreement with market leaders across the state to ensure that markets will operate consistently from Monday through Saturday, marking a significant step toward ending the persistent “sit-at-home” disruption that has affected commerce in the region.
In a high-level meeting held in Awka, the state capital, Governor Soludo engaged with representatives from major markets, including leaders from Onitsha Main Market and other commercial hubs. The focus of the discussions was to find a workable way to restore normal business activities throughout the week and boost economic productivity in Anambra.
Under the new agreement, market leaders pledged to ensure that traders open their shops and stalls on all weekdays, including Mondays, which have traditionally been observed as a shutdown day. Governor Soludo emphasized that regular market operations are vital for economic stability, sustaining livelihoods, and supporting the flow of goods and services across the state.
Traders and market associations expressed their willingness to comply with the governor’s directive, while also calling for enhanced support from the government in areas such as market logistics, security, and infrastructure improvements. Both sides agreed that collaborative efforts and effective monitoring will be essential to implement the new schedule successfully.
This agreement is seen as an important initiative to revive commercial activities, strengthen investor confidence, and ensure that Anambra’s markets, which are central to the state’s economy, continue to thrive throughout the working week.
