As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, several Igbo socio-political and youth organisations have declared a commitment to promoting credible leadership and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
Leading the charge is the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), which has stated that only candidates with proven competence, accountability, and integrity will receive support from voters in the South-East. The group noted that electing leaders based on empty promises or political manipulation should end.
According to the coalition, voters in the region are determined to ensure that their voices count. They urged citizens to take part in the democratic process by obtaining and using their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), adding that electoral outcomes must reflect the will of the people.
Igbo youth groups have also warned against attempts to undermine the electoral process. They pledged lawful and collective resistance to election rigging and stressed the need for free, fair, and transparent elections.
This movement is part of ongoing efforts across the South-East to improve political participation, increase voter awareness, and strengthen the region’s role in national politics. Discussions are also taking place among various groups to develop a common political agenda to guide endorsements ahead of the elections.
Analysts say this shift points to a more politically conscious electorate in Nigeria, where performance and credibility may influence future leadership.
With momentum building, the message from the South-East is clear: only credible candidates will earn the people’s mandate in 2027.
