Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi, popularly known as Mazi Gburugburu and a leading figure of the Action Peoples Party (APP) in Imo State, reconnected with his University of Ibadan alumni during a gathering of the Owerri Branch of the UI Alumni Association on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The event took place at Benchmark Hotel, Ikenegbu Layout, and marked Dr. Amadi’s first formal interaction with the alumni after returning from the United Kingdom.
The meeting brought together alumni, political associates, supporters, and members of the media, creating a platform for dialogue, networking, and intellectual exchange. The atmosphere was one of warmth and camaraderie, as members welcomed Dr. Amadi back into the fold.
Mr. Victor Ogwo, Chairman of the UIAA Imo Branch, officially presented Dr. Amadi with the association’s uniform and muffler, formally recognizing him as a member of the respected alumni network. Dr. Amadi described the occasion as an opportunity to reconnect with his academic family and rebuild long-standing relationships.
“I only came to get familiar with members of my Alma Mater and reconnect after a long time. It is good to see the association remains united and strong,” he told journalists.
During interactions with attendees, Dr. Amadi shared his plans for the 2027 general elections. He disclosed his intention to contest the Owerri Zone Senatorial seat as a step toward his governorship ambition in Imo State. He explained that the senatorial bid will provide insights into the needs and priorities of the people, helping him prepare for larger responsibilities in the state.
“I have the ability, experience, and connections to serve effectively. Our plan for the Senate is part of the process that leads to the governorship project,” Dr. Amadi said.
He spoke about his vision for Imo State, highlighting key areas he intends to address if elected. These include youth employment, job creation, development of healthcare facilities, improvements in infrastructure, enhanced security, and support for businesses. He stressed that his goal is to create an environment where citizens can thrive and communities can prosper.
The gathering also featured group discussions, networking sessions, and photographs, allowing alumni and guests to share ideas and strengthen personal and professional connections.
Notable attendees included Prof. Sally Ibe, Chief Comrade Salvator Amadi, Dr. Matthew Merenu, and Chief Henry Onwukwe (Apiti), Director General of The Mazi Organisation. Their presence reflected the wide reach and influence of the alumni network as well as Dr. Amadi’s engagement with stakeholders.
The event showcased the APP’s insignia, symbolized by a silver-colored elephant, which served as a reminder of the party’s values and commitment to leadership. Dr. Amadi used the opportunity to reiterate his dedication to serving the people of Imo State and his readiness to take on leadership responsibilities in both the legislative and executive arms of government.
By the end of the meeting, the atmosphere was one of unity and shared purpose. Alumni members expressed optimism about Dr. Amadi’s political plans, noting his academic background and experience as assets that position him to contribute meaningfully to Imo State’s development.
Dr. Amadi concluded the gathering by expressing gratitude to the alumni association and pledging to maintain strong ties with his academic family. He called on citizens to support leaders who are committed to practical solutions and tangible results that improve the quality of life in their communities.
