Landmark Partnership Set to Improve Health Outcomes, Create Jobs, and Reduce Import Dependence

Nigeria’s nutrition and healthcare sectors are set for a major transformation following a €6.3 million investment by the European Union (EU) to support the local production of nutrition, immunisation, and health commodities.

The initiative, launched in partnership with UNICEF and the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Enabling Local Manufacturing of Health, Immunisation and Nutrition Commodities in Nigeria (ELM-N) programme, aims to boost domestic manufacturing capacity and improve access to affordable, high-quality health products across the country.

The 24-month project is funded with €5.5 million from the EU and an additional €800,000 from Spain. It is expected to strengthen local industries, create employment opportunities, encourage innovation, and enhance the resilience of Nigeria’s health supply chain.

By promoting local manufacturing, the programme will help reduce the country’s reliance on imported nutrition and healthcare products while ensuring a more sustainable and reliable supply of essential commodities. Experts believe the initiative will play a crucial role in tackling malnutrition, particularly among children and vulnerable groups.

Beyond its health benefits, the investment is expected to stimulate economic growth and position Nigeria as a leading hub for health and nutrition manufacturing in West Africa.

As Nigeria continues to pursue food security and improved healthcare delivery, the EU-backed initiative represents a significant step toward a healthier population, a stronger economy, and a more self-reliant future.
