The Nigerian Army has delivered a firm ultimatum to Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province, and other armed groups operating in the countrys northeastern region, demanding their immediate surrender within the next 24 hours or face what officials describe as the full weight of decisive military force.
The warning was issued in a strongly worded statement released by military authorities following a series of intensified operations in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states. According to the Army, recent intelligence reports indicate heightened movements of insurgent factions, prompting the military to reinforce its ongoing counterterrorism campaign.
Brigadier General Name Placeholder, speaking on behalf of the Defence Headquarters, emphasized that the window for defection and surrender remains open but limited. He stated that the military is prepared to launch a sweeping offensive aimed at dismantling remaining terrorist hideouts, restoring stability, and protecting civilians in affected communities.
He said, We are giving all insurgents a final opportunity to lay down their arms and embrace peace. Failure to comply will attract immediate and overwhelming military action.
Reports indicate that ground troops, supported by air surveillance and special forces, have already been repositioned around strategic corridors believed to be used by militants. Armored units and rapid response teams have also been placed on standby as the deadline approaches.
Residents in nearby communities have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, with security operatives assuring the public that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent collateral damage during any upcoming operations.
The Army also appealed to local leaders, community members, and repentant ex fighters to encourage remaining militants to surrender. The military noted that insurgents who voluntarily turn themselves in will be processed through established rehabilitation programs.
Nigerias battle against Boko Haram and its splinter groups has lasted for more than a decade, resulting in thousands of casualties and widespread displacement. While the military has made significant progress in recent years, pockets of resistance remain in remote forests and border communities.
With the ultimatum now in place, the coming days are expected to be critical in determining whether remaining insurgents will surrender or whether the region will witness a new round of intensified military operations.
