Former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon together with leaders of the Arewa Consultative Forum and other northern elders has called on the Federal Government to take stronger and more decisive steps to address the rising level of insecurity across the country.
Their appeal follows repeated cases of bandit attacks, kidnappings, and communal violence that have caused loss of lives in several northern states. The elders noted that the continued spread of these incidents has created fear among citizens, disrupted economic activities, and weakened social stability in many communities.
During a meeting held to review the security situation, the northern leaders stated that although the government has made some efforts, the present scale of violence requires a more urgent and better coordinated response from the authorities.
They stressed the need for improved intelligence gathering, increased deployment of security personnel to rural areas, and stronger cooperation between federal and state governments. The elders also urged the government to speed up reforms in the security sector and ensure that security agencies have the equipment needed to confront armed groups.
General Gowon warned that insecurity threatens national unity and development, adding that no nation can make progress when its citizens live in constant fear. He encouraged continuous engagement with traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups to support security operations.
The Arewa Consultative Forum reaffirmed its readiness to support any move that will restore peace in the northern region and called on political leaders to treat security as a top national priority.
As attacks continue in several communities, the elders insist that only a firm, people focused, and well coordinated strategy will bring lasting peace to the region.
