The Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has fixed January 23, 2026 for the delivery of judgment in the suit challenging the conduct of the Rivers State local government election.
The case was filed by a civil society group seeking a ruling on the legality of the election and the processes that led to its conduct earlier in the year. During the sitting on Friday, the presiding judge announced the judgment date after hearing arguments from all parties involved.
Lawyers for the applicants argued that the election did not comply with constitutional requirements and asked the court to either nullify the exercise or interpret the legality of the procedures used. Counsel representing the state electoral body and government officials maintained that the poll was properly conducted.
The judgment is expected to have major implications for grassroots governance in Rivers State, where the local government system has been a source of political tension in recent months.
Civil society groups, political observers, and residents are now awaiting the courts decision, which is expected to clarify the status of the election and determine the next steps for local council administration in the state.
