The NCHEKWA NDI OGBENYE FOUNDATION has called on the management of Federal University of Technology Owerri and relevant security agencies to urgently strengthen security measures within and around the university environment in order to protect students and staff.
The foundation expressed concern over increasing reports of insecurity and unauthorized movement around the institution, stressing that immediate action is necessary to prevent threats to lives and property. According to the group, students deserve a safe and peaceful learning environment free from fear and intimidation.
As part of its recommendations, the organization urged the university management to restrict commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada operators, from using routes that pass directly through the campus to neighboring communities such as Ihiagwa and Eziobodo. It suggested that riders should instead operate from designated drop-off points outside the university gate.
The group also called for the deployment of more police officers, security personnel, and local vigilante operatives at strategic locations within and outside the campus to improve surveillance and emergency response.
In addition, the foundation appealed for the clearing of bushes and isolated areas surrounding the institution, noting that such locations could become hideouts for criminal activities if not properly monitored and maintained.
The organization further urged the university authorities, host communities, traditional leaders, and government agencies to work together in ensuring lasting peace and security around the school environment.
According to the foundation, protecting the lives and wellbeing of students must remain a top priority, adding that parents and guardians should have confidence that their children are safe while pursuing their education.
