Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies, insisting that the Federal Government’s priority is investing in infrastructure and economic development rather than accumulating savings.

Speaking on the administration’s economic direction, Umahi argued that a government should focus on addressing the immediate needs of its citizens by funding critical projects that create jobs, improve transportation, and stimulate economic growth.

According to the minister, “You can’t be saving when the people are hungry, when there is no industry,” emphasizing that resources are better spent on roads, bridges, and other key infrastructure capable of driving long-term national development.

Umahi maintained that strategic investments and responsible borrowing for capital projects will strengthen Nigeria’s economy, enhance connectivity, attract investment, and improve the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.

The Tinubu administration has consistently maintained that its economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, are designed to rebuild the country’s fiscal capacity, improve public finances, and lay a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth.

While the reforms have generated public debate amid rising living costs, government officials insist that the focus remains on channeling available resources into projects that will deliver lasting economic benefits rather than keeping funds idle.
