Novak Djokovic’s previous comments about Lionel Messi have resurfaced following his victory in the 2024 Laureus Sportsman of the Year category.
Djokovic joins Messi as a recipient of this prestigious award, as Messi claimed the honor in 2023. The two athletes crossed paths in August last year, following Messi’s transfer to MLS outfit Inter Miami.
After their encounter, Djokovic expressed high praise for the two-time FIFA World Cup winner, stating, “It’s the second time we’ve met. We had a 15-minute conversation about everything. I would love to meet him again and discuss everything. Messi is a phenomenon. He’s a tremendous champion, and I have immense respect for him.”
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic had an exceptional 2023, clinching three Grand Slam titles. He currently holds the record for the most Grand Slam singles titles in men’s tennis history, with 24 victories, surpassing Rafael Nadal (22) and Roger Federer (20).
In contrast, Lionel Messi continues to excel in MLS with Inter Miami, showcasing remarkable form this season with nine goals and five assists in nine matches across various competitions.
Regarding Laureus awards, Novak Djokovic has earned the Sportsman of the Year title five times throughout his illustrious career, claiming victory in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2019.
On the other hand, Lionel Messi has secured the award twice, jointly with Lewis Hamilton in 2020 and individually in 2023. Notably, he remains the sole player in a team sport to achieve this feat.
Although Messi relinquished his Laureus crown to Djokovic this year, both athletes are revered in their respective domains, earning admiration from fans worldwide.
