The Imo State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, has asked for the help of media professionals to improve the ministry’s progress. This request was made on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at the Imo State Secretariat complex in Owerri.
During a media interaction, Hon. Onyeocha expressed his belief in the media’s ability to positively impact the ministry’s growth. He highlighted that working with experienced media professionals and collaborating with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) would help achieve success in the sector.
“We are here to get acquainted, not for a typical press briefing. When the time comes, we will hold a press briefing. Today, I am eager to hear from you journalists, gather contributions, suggestions, and ideas on how to advance the State Ministry of Sports and Youth Development,” said Onyeocha.
Answering questions from journalists, Hon. Onyeocha confirmed his commitment to addressing past issues in the ministry and emphasized his focus on youth development. He assured that his administration would work hard to resolve youth unrest and leadership conflicts in rural areas, with his office open to receiving complaints and petitions to restore peace and order.
Regarding the challenges faced by the Imo State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), which is currently involved in leadership disputes, Hon. Onyeocha promised to mediate and bring the conflicting parties together to restore peace.
Hon. Onyeocha also stressed the importance of working closely with journalists in the state and urged media professionals to support and promote the ministry’s initiatives. He detailed the government’s numerous youth programs aimed at creating wealth, acquiring skills, and empowering the youth under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s 3R mantra.
Additionally, Hon. Onyeocha celebrated the achievements of Imo State athletes who have won medals in national and international competitions, including gold, silver, and bronze awards. Notable athletes mentioned included Prince Kennedy Nwamkpa (Mr. Universe) and Miss Chituru Nwaozuzu, a gold medalist in para table tennis.
The event concluded with the official presentation of customized “Heartland Football Club” jerseys to the journalists, including members of SWAN.
