Reports have emerged of a brutal armed attack near the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, where over 30 female students were allegedly raped during a coordinated raid on off-campus student lodges. The incident reportedly occurred on July 26, 2025, in the student-dominated communities of Akunza, Gandu, and Burkan Kwato.
Eyewitnesses claim the attackers arrived heavily armed, storming residential lodges, robbing students, and subjecting many to acts of sexual violence. Several male students were also reportedly assaulted while attempting to resist the invaders.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, the Nasarawa State Police Command has denied the reports of mass rape, describing the incident instead as a robbery affecting two individuals on July 31. Authorities say there is no credible evidence to support claims of widespread sexual assault and warned against the spread of misinformation.
In response, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) condemned the attack and called for an independent investigation. The group demanded compensation of ₦50 million for each alleged victim and urged the government to take immediate steps to secure students living off-campus.
The conflicting accounts have sparked public outrage and renewed concern over student safety and the persistent threat of insecurity in educational institutions across Nigeria. Calls for justice and accountability continue to mount as authorities face pressure to uncover the full truth behind the reported attack.
