The Imo State President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Okechukwu Charles Okere, has commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for increasing the minimum wage for civil servants in Imo State from ₦70,000 to ₦104,000.

The wage increase, which comes amid widespread economic challenges, has been described as a timely intervention for workers across all 27 local government areas in Imo State. According to Comrade Okere, the decision reflects Governor Uzodimma’s commitment to the welfare of public servants and his responsiveness to the needs of the people.

Comrade Okere also likened the governor to a generator that gives power — like a sound prove generator that doesn’t make noise — highlighting his quiet but highly effective leadership approach.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, during a meeting between the governor and the State Administrative Council of Organized Labour at the Government House in Owerri.

Okere was joined by Comrade Chidi Madu, former Administrative Council Member of NULGE and representative of the Young Workers Association, as well as Comrade Chidi Ogwuegbu, Deputy Director of Administration and Head of Personnel Management in the Unified Local Government System at Ohaji/Egbema LGA.

He noted that, following the wage review, some health workers in the state are expected to receive monthly salaries exceeding ₦500,000, reflecting the government’s prioritization of frontline personnel.

Governor Uzodimma also urged local government staff to improve service delivery, ensure proper deployment of personnel, clear bushes, fumigate offices, and rehabilitate abandoned public infrastructure. In addition, he announced plans to distribute food palliatives such as rice, garri, groundnut oil, and tomato paste, beginning with local government workers and eventually extending to the public at subsidized prices.

The Imo State NULGE president commended the rise in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which has increased from approximately ₦300–₦400 million to ₦4 billion. This financial growth, he said, has enabled significant infrastructural projects and social welfare programs.

He also acknowledged Governor Uzodimma’s efforts in clearing pension arrears spanning over two decades and releasing ₦17 billion to meet critical financial obligations.

Concluding the briefing, Comrade Okere assured that local government workers in Imo State would continue to support the governor’s Shared Prosperity initiative and the ongoing Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction (3R) agenda.
