At the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja’s General Assembly, Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma emphasized that churches should prioritize evangelism and soul-winning over materialism and political engagement. Speaking as Chairman of the occasion, he cautioned against the rise of prosperity gospel and the monetization of liturgical activities, which he said undermines the sacredness of worship.
Uzodimma stressed that while church infrastructure is important, no physical building can replace the core mission of winning souls. He condemned fundraising practices that lack dignity and called for financial activities to be carried out with restraint befitting the house of God.
He also warned priests against using the pulpit for political purposes, which goes against church tradition. The governor praised the Abuja Archdiocese for its strong commitment to liturgical discipline, which he described as the soul and oxygen of the church, preserving its unity and witness.
Finally, Uzodimma encouraged the Archdiocese to continue nurturing clergy and laity who see the liturgy as a sacred gift rather than a mere duty.
