The Dangote Group has confirmed the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Josephine Otabor, also known as Phyna. Ruth died on Saturday, August 31, 2025, weeks after she was involved in a road accident with a Dangote truck in Auchi, Edo State.
According to a statement by the company, the incident happened on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Ruth sustained severe injuries after a collision with one of its trucks, which led to the amputation of one of her legs. She remained in critical condition following the accident.
The Dangote Group stated that it had covered all her medical expenses and had arranged for her to be flown to India for further treatment. However, due to her medical condition, doctors advised that she was not stable enough for travel. She later passed away at around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Despite all efforts and arrangements made to move her abroad for more advanced care, she unfortunately did not survive,” the company said in its statement. It also extended condolences to her family, friends, and associates.
A legal representative of the Otabor family, Eko Solicitors & Advocates, also confirmed her death. The firm noted that Ruth had recently graduated from Auchi Polytechnic just days before the accident.
Her death has drawn public attention online, with social media users reacting to the incident and calling for improved safety measures for trucks operating in populated areas.
The family has requested privacy during this time. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
The company also stated that it remains committed to reviewing its operations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
