Panic gripped residents of Oworonshoki in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State on Saturday as officials of the Lagos State Government reportedly resumed demolition of structures in the area.
Bulldozers accompanied by security operatives were seen pulling down buildings and makeshift shops along the waterfront and nearby streets. Many residents were forced to hurriedly pack their belongings as the demolition progressed.
Community members described the renewed exercise as sudden and inhumane, alleging that no formal notice was given before government machinery moved in. Some residents accused the authorities of ignoring ongoing appeals for more time and alternative relocation arrangements.
Local sources said the demolition targets structures allegedly built on drainage channels and areas marked for urban renewal projects. Officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development have insisted that the operation is part of the state’s ongoing effort to restore order, ensure safety, and improve environmental conditions in waterfront communities.
Meanwhile, human rights advocates and community leaders have called on the state government to suspend the exercise and adopt a more humanitarian approach to urban redevelopment, especially for families displaced by the demolition.
Security personnel were still stationed across parts of Oworonshoki at press time to maintain order and prevent possible clashes.
