Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has intensified his campaign against land grabbers, targeting illegal occupations of government properties. This initiative, described as using a “sledgehammer” on offenders, aims to restore law and order regarding land ownership and usage in the state.
Under the leadership of Paschal Nwakamma, the Special Adviser on Land Recovery, the state government is vigorously reclaiming illegally seized lands. Nwakamma’s efforts have faced significant resistance, including attempts at blackmail and other forms of obstruction by the land grabbers. Despite these challenges, Nwakamma remains committed to his mandate, emphasizing that the administration will not tolerate any disruptions to its land recovery drive .
New Tactics by Land Grabbers Amid Government Crackdown
In response to the government’s intensified actions, land grabbers in Imo State have adopted new strategies to outmanoeuver the authorities. These tactics include enlisting local villagers to falsely claim government lands and using manipulated white paper reports to legitimize their claims. The state government has warned that such manoeuvers will not be tolerated and has vowed to continue its efforts to reclaim all illegally occupied lands
Conflict at Avu Mechanic Village Over Land Acquisition
A notable incident in the ongoing land recovery efforts occurred at the Avu Mechanic Village, where a disputed land acquisition led to a violent confrontation. Mechanics operating in the area reported being attacked by police and having some of their members arrested during a forced eviction. The mechanics have appealed to Governor Uzodimma to intervene and halt what they describe as illegal land grabs by government officials. This incident highlights the tensions and conflicts arising from the state’s determined push to reclaim government lands.
