Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has reaffirmed and okayed his administration’s dedication to implementing the newly approved national minimum wage of N70,000.
This commitment follows a closed-door meeting with labor leaders in the state.
During the briefing on Thursday, Governor Uzodimma announced that the commencement of the N70,000 minimum wage payment is imminent, as the government and labor representatives are finalizing the necessary modalities.
He emphasized that the new wage is both fair and appropriate, given the current economic climate and rising living costs.
The Governor highlighted the dual purpose of the minimum wage: to stimulate the economy and to alleviate the financial hardships faced by workers.
He noted that the Federal Government’s decision to establish the new wage was a response to these pressing challenges.
While promising that payments will begin soon, Governor Uzodimma urged workers to enhance their commitment and productivity.
He explained that the implementation of the N70,000 wage will also require careful consideration of consequential adjustments for senior staff, ensuring equitable distribution of incentives across all levels of employment.
Acknowledging the constraints of limited government resources, the Governor reassured workers that he is committed to the swift implementation of the minimum wage, with expectations that all matters will be resolved within the next two months.
He reiterated the need for improved service delivery to the citizens of Imo State and called on workers to collaborate in enhancing the dividends of democracy.
Responding to the Governor’s assurances, Comrade Uche Chigaemezue Nwigwe, Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Imo State Chapter, commended Governor Uzodimma for his worker-friendly approach and his readiness to implement the national minimum wage.
Nwigwe pledged that discussions would be expedited in the coming meetings, assuring that Imo workers will soon receive their rightful wages.
