Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly selected three senior clerics as potential successors in a secret move that signals rising fears over his safety amid escalating conflict with Israel. The decision, made privately and outside of Iran’s official succession process, comes as Israeli military operations target critical Iranian infrastructure in what has become the most severe escalation between the two nations in decades.
Now 86 years old, Khamenei is said to be operating from a heavily fortified underground bunker. In addition to choosing successors, he has reshuffled Iran’s military command, preparing backups for top positions in anticipation of further targeted killings of key Iranian and Hezbollah figures.
