Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has stirred the political waters ahead of the 2027 governorship race by declaring that he will not be guided by zoning arrangements or the Charter of Equity in determining his preferred successor.
Speaking during a Sunday service in the state, the governor stated firmly that his focus is on continuity, not sectional demands. He noted that any political bloc agitating for power rotation based on senatorial zones is acting on its own, as his priority remains the preservation of his administration’s legacy.
Uzodimma maintained that what Imo needs is a leader with the competence and vision to consolidate the strides made over the last few years—not someone selected to satisfy geopolitical expectations.
“What matters to me is not where the next governor comes from, but who can sustain and expand the progress we’ve made. Anyone focused on zoning or Charter of Equity is not aligned with my vision,” he said.
He listed ongoing reforms in infrastructure, education, health, public service, and the digital economy as critical achievements that must be protected beyond 2027. According to him, these gains should not be sacrificed on the altar of political appeasement or ethnic sentiment.
The governor’s remarks are expected to reshape political conversations in the state, where pressure has been mounting from certain quarters calling for adherence to power rotation among Imo’s three senatorial zones. With this declaration, Uzodimma has made it clear that competence and loyalty to the state’s development agenda will determine who he supports.
As the political climate begins to heat up, the governor’s statement has sent a strong signal that he intends to play a decisive role in shaping the future leadership of Imo—on his own terms.
