President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a $125 million loan from the Islamic Development Bank to fund the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project.
The $263.8 million project, co-financed by the African Development Bank, the Canada–Africa Development Bank, and the Abia State Government, will cover 126 kilometres of roads in Aba, 35.57 kilometres in Umuahia, a connecting road between the cities, and major erosion control works.
It is expected to create over 3,000 jobs, cut travel times, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve access to essential services. While some reports quoted ₦200 billion, officials only confirmed the dollar amount, noting the Naira figure is a currency conversion estimate.
Governor Alex Otti praised the approval as a transformative step for Abia’s infrastructure and economy.
