Israel Threatens Houthi Rebels with ‘Biblical Response’ After Renewed Missile Attacks

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has issued a stark warning to Yemen’s Houthi rebels following a new wave of missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territory. In a post shared on social media, Katz declared, “A plague of darkness, a plague of the firstborn — we will complete all ten plagues,” referencing the Ten Plagues of Egypt from the biblical Book of Exodus.

While clearly symbolic, the statement underscores Israel’s growing resolve to respond more forcefully to Houthi aggression, which has intensified in recent weeks.

Recent attacks launched by the Houthis, an Iran-backed rebel faction based in northern Yemen, included ballistic missiles and drones aimed at Israeli airspace. On September 3, Israel’s air defense systems intercepted a missile launched from Yemen. According to military sources, some of the projectiles carried cluster bomb warheads designed to maximize damage over wide areas. No casualties were reported, but the attacks represent a serious escalation.

In response, Israel has stepped up its military operations against Houthi positions in Yemen. Targeted airstrikes have hit several locations in Sana’a and Hodeida, two strongholds of the Houthi movement. Among the most significant developments was the recent killing of Ahmed al-Rahawi, the Houthi-appointed prime minister, in an Israeli airstrike. The operation was reportedly carried out to disrupt a high-level leadership meeting and further weaken the group’s command structure.

Israel’s reference to biblical imagery appears to be a calculated message intended to project strength and deterrence. Analysts view it as part of a broader strategy to communicate that Israel is prepared to escalate its military response if the attacks continue. The statement also indirectly targets Iran, the main sponsor of the Houthi movement, sending a warning that proxy attacks will not go unanswered.

This development marks an expansion of Israel’s direct military engagement in Yemen, a conflict that already involves multiple regional players, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The risk of a broader confrontation in the Red Sea region is growing, particularly as both Israel and Western allies seek to ensure the security of maritime routes and counter the spread of Iranian influence.

At present, no full-scale ground operation is anticipated, but Israeli officials have made it clear that any further aggression from Yemen will be met with overwhelming force. The coming days may determine whether this conflict remains a series of targeted strikes or expands into a wider regional crisis.
