The convoy of former Anambra State governor Dr Chris Ngige came under heavy attack on Monday along the Nkpor Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The incident caused panic among residents and road users as gunshots echoed across the area during the assault.

Dr Ngige was not traveling with the convoy at the time of the attack. According to eyewitness accounts, the armed men who carried out the operation wore a mixture of police and army uniforms, which created initial confusion for those who saw them. They reportedly opened fire on the pilot vehicle at close range, forcing other vehicles in the convoy and nearby motorists to flee for safety.

A police officer in the pilot car sustained gunshot injuries, and the attackers seized his gun and uniform before escaping. The pilot vehicle was severely damaged and left with multiple bullet holes, indicating the intensity of the gunfire exchanged.

Tragically, a woman who attempted to record the unfolding violence on her mobile phone was shot and killed instantly. Her death has drawn sympathy and sadness from residents who described her as a peaceful individual caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. A shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was also struck by bullets. He lost a substantial amount of blood and was quickly taken to a medical facility. Doctors have scheduled him for surgery to remove the bullets, and he is expected to make a full recovery. The police escort leader who was also shot has undergone surgery and is responding well to treatment.

Dr Chris Ngige confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation, expressing shock and sadness over the violence. He extended his condolences to the family of the woman who died and assured that he would do everything within his power to support the injured victims and ensure they receive proper medical attention.

Residents in the Idemili area have called for increased security presence along major roads, especially in the evenings, to prevent further attacks. Many expressed concern about the rising number of violent incidents involving armed groups disguised as security officers.

The Anambra State Police Command has not yet released an official statement regarding the attack. Security personnel have reportedly begun investigations to identify the attackers and uncover the motives behind the assault.
