Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja. The arrest took place at his residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road in the Asokoro district in the early hours of Thursday.
Earlier reports on social media had suggested that the former governor was kidnapped, but his media aide later clarified that he was in the custody of the EFCC. According to the aide, Ngige had been cooperating with investigators and was already on administrative bail before the sudden arrest.
Eyewitnesses described the operation as a forceful and abrupt raid, claiming that EFCC officials took Ngige away without giving him time to gather personal items or change clothes. Members of his family expressed concern about the manner in which the arrest was carried out, saying it lacked clarity and proper communication.
Although the EFCC has not yet released an official statement on the arrest, sources close to the investigation say the agency is preparing to file charges against him. His team also indicated that he may be arraigned in court as early as today, marking a significant development in the ongoing case.
The arrest comes a few days after an attack on Ngiges convoy in Anambra State, an incident that occurred when he was not present. It remains unclear whether this recent attack has any connection to the EFCC action, but it has added to the tension surrounding the situation.
As the public awaits a formal explanation from the EFCC, questions continue to rise regarding the allegations that may be brought against the former governor. His legal team maintains that he is ready to appear in court and respond to any charges once they are officially presented.
