At least 39 people were killed and many others injured after two high-speed passenger trains collided in southern Spain on Sunday evening, according to authorities.

The crash occurred near the town of Adamuz in the province of Córdoba when one train derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, striking another high-speed service traveling in the opposite direction. Several carriages derailed as a result of the impact, with some sliding down nearby embankments.

Hundreds of passengers were believed to be on board the two trains at the time of the collision. Emergency responders, including firefighters, medical teams, and helicopters, were dispatched to the scene to rescue survivors and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

Officials warned that the death toll could rise as search and recovery operations continue. Rail services in the affected area have been suspended, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
