Uzodinma Supports Governorship Rotation as Imo Moves to Maintain Peace and Balance

Hope Uzodinma has declared that the governorship position in Imo State will continue to rotate among the three senatorial zones of Orlu, Okigwe, and Owerri, in line with the Charter of Equity designed by stakeholders in the state.

The governor spoke at the Government House Banquet Hall in Owerri while receiving a report from the Imo Elders Council. The document outlined an agreed framework intended to guide how political leadership should be shared across the three zones to avoid imbalance and promote fairness in the state’s governance structure.

Uzodinma stated that the zoning arrangement is necessary to ensure that no part of the state feels left out of leadership. According to him, when people see themselves as part of the system, it reduces tension and creates an atmosphere where development can take place without disruption. He added that the government would resist any attempt by individuals or groups to disrupt the agreed order through what he described as a “hostile takeover.”

The governor pointed to the events surrounding the 2020 political situation that led to his emergence as governor, noting that the experience showed how fragile peace can be when sections of society feel excluded. He explained that political inclusion is closely tied to stability, warning that denying people a sense of belonging in governance can lead to unrest.

He also noted that building consensus among political actors and stakeholders remains one of the most reliable ways to avoid conflict. By encouraging dialogue and agreement, the state can move forward without unnecessary divisions that could slow down progress.

Uzodinma described the Imo Elders Council as a guiding voice in the affairs of the state. He encouraged its members to continue offering advice and direction that would help leaders make decisions that benefit the people. According to him, the wisdom and experience of the elders remain valuable in navigating political and social challenges.

The Charter of Equity, as presented by the council, is expected to serve as a reference point for political stakeholders, especially as future elections approach. Many observers see the arrangement as an effort to maintain balance among the zones while giving each area a sense of participation in leadership.

With this position, the state government aims to promote peaceful coexistence, reduce rivalry, and create a political environment where leadership transitions can take place without conflict.
