The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media that falsely depicts the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), warning Nigerians not to fall victim to AI-generated misinformation.
In a statement, the military described the video as a fabricated piece of content created using artificial intelligence technology to mislead the public and damage the image of the nation’s security leadership.
According to the DHQ, the defence chiefs neither made the statements attributed to them nor participated in the recording being circulated online. The military stressed that the video is entirely fake and should be disregarded by members of the public.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the rise of AI-powered “deepfake” technology, which can generate highly realistic videos, images, and audio recordings that are difficult to distinguish from authentic content.
The Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians to verify sensitive information through official military and government channels before sharing it on social media, noting that the spread of false information could undermine public trust and security efforts.
Authorities also disclosed that investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals behind the creation and distribution of the manipulated video.
As technology continues to evolve, the DHQ called for greater digital awareness, cautioning citizens to remain vigilant and avoid becoming tools in the spread of fake news.
The military urged Nigerians to ignore the viral clip and rely only on verified sources for updates concerning security matters.
