In a renewed call for coordinated national action, a federal government minister has urged stronger intervention and support for 258 Nigerian returnees from South Africa, highlighting the growing need for structured reintegration programmes as the country marks Democracy Day.
The appeal comes amid ongoing discussions about migration, citizen welfare abroad, and the responsibility of government to assist Nigerians who return home under challenging circumstances.
The minister stressed that the returnees require more than immediate relief, emphasizing the importance of long-term reintegration strategies that will help them rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
He noted that many of the affected individuals face difficulties in adjusting after their return, including unemployment, limited access to capital, and social reintegration challenges.
According to the minister, addressing these issues will require a coordinated approach involving federal agencies, state governments, and private sector partners to ensure that the returnees are not left vulnerable or excluded.
He further explained that sustainable empowerment programmes such as skills acquisition, vocational training, and small business support should be prioritized to help the returnees become self-reliant.
The statement also called on development organizations and humanitarian partners to collaborate with government efforts in providing structured assistance to the affected individuals.
Migration-related challenges involving Nigerians in South Africa were also referenced, with officials noting that economic pressure and documentation issues have contributed to increased return movements in recent years.
The minister described the situation as a reminder of the need for stronger systems to support Nigerians both at home and abroad, particularly those affected by cross-border economic and social challenges.
He added that Democracy Day should not only be a moment of reflection but also an opportunity to reinforce policies that protect citizens and promote inclusive development.
