The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), has announced that the Department of State Services (DSS) and international observers will monitor the association’s forthcoming national elections to ensure the process is transparent, peaceful, and credible.
Osigwe said the move is part of the NBA’s efforts to strengthen confidence in its electoral process and ensure that members participate in an election that meets acceptable standards of fairness and accountability.
He noted that the involvement of security agencies and independent foreign observers is aimed at promoting transparency and protecting the integrity of the election from the beginning to the declaration of results.
According to the NBA president, the Electoral Committee has put the necessary measures in place to ensure that the electronic voting system functions effectively and gives every eligible member an equal opportunity to cast a vote.
He urged candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the election period, avoid actions capable of creating tension, and respect the rules guiding the electoral process.
Osigwe also encouraged members of the association to take part in the election, describing their participation as essential to strengthening the NBA’s democratic culture and ensuring the emergence of leaders who enjoy the confidence of the legal profession.
He expressed optimism that the election would be conducted without disruption and that the outcome would reflect the genuine choice of members across the country.
The NBA is expected to elect new national officers who will lead the association for the next term, with legal practitioners from across Nigeria participating through the approved electronic voting platform.
The announcement has further raised expectations for a transparent election, as members look forward to a peaceful exercise that will reinforce confidence in the association’s leadership and democratic process.
