…“I’ll Never Support Uzodimma for Senate President,” Wike Declares

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared that he will not support Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, in any bid to become the next President of the Nigerian Senate.
Wike made his position known during an appearance on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, where he spoke extensively about the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Rivers State governor said his opposition to Uzodimma’s reported ambition was not based on personal differences, but rather on political considerations and disagreements over the direction of the ruling political establishment.
Wike also alleged that Uzodimma, who serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, is using his political influence to shape the emergence of lawmakers ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Wike, the outcome of the 2027 legislative elections will ultimately determine the composition of the National Assembly, including those who will elect the next Senate President.
He further argued that politicians who lose their tickets within the ruling party but subsequently contest under other political platforms could still emerge victorious at the polls and eventually become members of the National Assembly.
Wike suggested that such lawmakers would not necessarily be committed to supporting Uzodimma if he eventually pursues the Senate presidency.
The FCT minister also connected the disagreement to the emerging Rainbow Coalition, a political alliance involving politicians from different backgrounds and parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
While making his position clear, Wike stressed that his opposition to Uzodimma was “not personal,” even as he questioned aspects of the Imo governor’s political strategy and ambitions.
Uzodimma, meanwhile, has not publicly indicated that he has secured the support required to emerge as Senate President. The position is ultimately decided by senators following the constitution of a new National Assembly.
Wike’s declaration has nevertheless added another dimension to the political calculations surrounding the 2027 elections, particularly as politicians and political groups begin positioning themselves for influential legislative and executive positions.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the battle for control of the National Assembly is expected to generate intense negotiations, alliances and realignments among political stakeholders.
Wike’s latest comments therefore signal that the contest for the leadership of the 11th National Assembly could extend beyond party structures, with individual politicians and emerging coalitions potentially playing significant roles in determining who eventually occupies the Senate President’s seat.
As political manoeuvring intensifies ahead of 2027, Wike’s firm declaration has made one thing clear: he does not intend to support Uzodimma’s reported Senate presidency ambition.
