Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has described the recent political upheaval in Guinea-Bissau as a “ceremonial coup,” alleging that President Umaro Sissoco Embaló orchestrated the process to consolidate his authority.
Jonathan, a leading figure in regional diplomacy and a longtime advocate for democratic stability in West Africa, criticized the power shift and called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to immediately release the pending election results for the country. He argued that transparency from the regional bloc is essential to preventing further tension and ensuring the credibility of the electoral process.
According to Jonathan, the situation in Guinea-Bissau raises significant concerns about constitutional order and the integrity of governance in the region. He emphasized that ECOWAS must act swiftly to uphold its mandate of safeguarding democracy across member states.
Jonathan’s comments add to growing regional debate over Guinea-Bissau’s political climate and the role of ECOWAS in managing electoral disputes. The development has drawn international attention as West Africa continues to grapple with recurring political instability.
