Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday attended the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking his first appearance at a State House event since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office.
The annual Christmas carol service, held at the State House Chapel, was hosted by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The event attracted several dignitaries, including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and religious leaders from across the country.
Obasanjo, who has recently been vocal in his criticism of the Tinubu administration over governance and national challenges, played a visible role during the service by reading one of the Bible lessons from the Book of Genesis. His presence at Aso Rock drew public attention, given the perceived political distance between the former president and the current administration.
The service, themed Emmanuel God With Us, featured scripture readings, prayers for national peace and stability, and Christmas carols performed by a combined choir, including representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria. Clerics used the occasion to urge Nigerians to embrace unity, compassion, and responsible leadership, especially in the face of economic hardship and security concerns.
President Bola Tinubu was absent from the event, a development that generated discussion among political observers and on social media. However, sources within the Presidency explained that the absence was not intended as a snub, noting that the programme was a religious gathering rather than a formal state function.
Obasanjo’s appearance at the Presidential Villa comes amid heightened public debate following his recent comments on national leadership and direction. Although there was no recorded interaction between him and President Tinubu, his attendance added a symbolic dimension to the occasion.
The Aso Rock Christmas carol service remains a significant part of Nigeria’s festive calendar, bringing together leaders across political, religious, and social lines to reflect on the message of Christmas and offer prayers for unity and progress in the nation.
