Former Rivers State governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the people of Rivers State will not repeat what he described as past political mistakes as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

Wike made the statement while addressing supporters and political stakeholders in the state, noting that previous political decisions had resulted in avoidable crises and setbacks. He said those experiences should serve as lessons, urging the people to be more careful and intentional in their choices going forward.

Although he did not mention any individual by name, his remarks were widely interpreted as a reference to the ongoing political tension in the state, particularly the strained relationship between him and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The disagreement between both leaders has continued to shape political conversations and realignments within Rivers State.

The former governor warned that governance should not be treated lightly, stressing that leadership positions must be entrusted to individuals with proven capacity, commitment to the people, and respect for political structures. He argued that Rivers State cannot afford decisions that could undermine stability, development, and unity.

Wike also downplayed the role of party labels in determining leadership, stating that competence, experience, and dedication to the state’s progress should remain the guiding factors. He added that political mobilisation and reorganisation were already underway ahead of the 2027 elections.

His comments signal an early build-up to what is expected to be an intense political contest in Rivers State, as key players begin to position themselves for influence.

The statement has further heightened political discussions, reinforcing expectations that the state will remain a major battleground as the next election cycle approaches.
