Nurses have issued a strong call for decisive action to halt what they describe as the steady decline of the health sector, warning that continued inaction threatens both patient safety and the future of healthcare delivery.
Raising the alarm over worsening conditions in public health facilities, the nurses cited severe staff shortages, lack of essential medical supplies, poor infrastructure, and delayed promotions as long-standing problems that have reached a breaking point. They said these challenges have left nurses overworked, underpaid, and increasingly demoralized.
According to the nurses, many hospitals and clinics are operating under extreme pressure, with limited equipment and inadequate funding undermining the quality of care. They warned that burnout among health workers is accelerating, fueling resignations and the migration of skilled professionals to other countries in search of better working conditions.
In a list of clear demands, the nurses called for the immediate recruitment of additional staff, prompt payment of salaries and allowances, improved workplace safety, and sustained investment in modern medical equipment.
They also demanded structured training programs and transparent career progression systems to retain experienced professionals and motivate younger nurses.
Union leaders stressed that the demands go beyond labour issues, framing them as a matter of national interest. “A broken health workforce means a broken health system,” one representative said, noting that patients ultimately bear the cost of neglect and poor planning.
The nurses urged government and health authorities to move beyond promises and engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at delivering lasting reforms. While reaffirming their commitment to patient care, they cautioned that continued neglect could trigger further disruptions in health services.
As pressure mounts, all eyes are now on policymakers to determine whether they will respond with urgency or allow the crisis in the health sector to deepen further.
