The Commissioner of Police in Delta State has ordered the removal and redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Jesse Police Division following allegations of a ₦2.5 million extortion involving the officer and two subordinates.
The decision comes after a video circulated widely on social media in which a woman accused the DPO and two police officers of demanding ₦2.5 million to secure the release of her younger brother, who was in police custody.
According to the allegation, the money was requested as a condition for freeing the young man, who had reportedly been arrested in connection with an illegal firearms investigation.
Reacting swiftly to the allegation, the Delta State Commissioner of Police directed that the DPO be redeployed to the command headquarters pending the outcome of a full investigation.
The Commissioner also ordered the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Anti-Cult and Tactical Units (X-Squad) to immediately commence a thorough probe into the incident.
As part of disciplinary measures, one of the officers allegedly involved has been detained, while the second officer is also under investigation. The police authorities noted that the action was not only in response to the viral allegation but also to address previous complaints of extortion and unprofessional conduct reportedly linked to the DPO.
The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward extortion, abuse of office, and other acts of misconduct.
The Commissioner stressed that any officer found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and existing regulations, adding that the command remains committed to restoring public trust and upholding professionalism within the force.
