The political tension in Rivers State has intensified following a fresh warning from a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Governor Siminalayi Fubara over his ongoing fallout with former governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The APC chieftain cautioned that political conflicts involving powerful allies often carry serious consequences, stressing that history has shown such disputes rarely end favourably. He linked the growing instability in Rivers State to what he described as Governor Fubara’s alleged distancing from Wike, who was instrumental in his rise to power.
According to him, political loyalty and strategic alignment remain critical in Nigeria’s power dynamics, particularly when influential figures with deep political structures are involved. He warned that ignoring these realities could weaken Fubara’s grip on governance and expose his administration to sustained opposition.
Rivers State has in recent months been gripped by political uncertainty, with divisions within the State House of Assembly, impeachment threats, and disruptions to legislative activities. Observers say the crisis is rooted in the breakdown of trust between the governor and his predecessor, a development that has sharply divided political stakeholders across party lines.
The APC chieftain urged Governor Fubara to embrace dialogue and reconciliation, noting that prolonged political battles could distract from governance and undermine public confidence. He added that unresolved power struggles often leave lasting damage on administrations and political careers.
As the standoff continues, residents and analysts have expressed concern over its impact on development and stability in the oil-producing state. Many have called on political leaders to set aside personal differences and focus on the collective interest of Rivers State and its people.
