The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called for renewed discipline, unity, and internal restructuring within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the opposition party intensifies efforts to reposition itself for future electoral contests in Nigeria.
Wike made this known while speaking on recent developments within the party, stressing that the PDP must now focus on consolidating its internal strength and rebuilding trust among its active members. According to him, political success in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space requires not only popularity but also consistency, loyalty, and strong organizational structure.
He said the party’s future depends heavily on the ability of its leadership and members to work together with a shared sense of purpose. Wike noted that internal divisions, personal interests, and long-standing disagreements have often weakened political parties in Nigeria, and warned that such challenges must be addressed decisively if the PDP hopes to remain competitive.
The FCT Minister further stated that the PDP must prioritize the commitment of members who remain actively engaged in the party’s activities and development. He argued that building a strong political platform requires dedication from individuals who are willing to contribute meaningfully to its growth, rather than focusing on factional politics or internal conflicts.
Wike also highlighted the importance of reconciliation efforts within the party, urging stakeholders to channel their energy towards strengthening the PDP’s structures at the grassroots level. He explained that a united and well-organized party is better positioned to connect with voters and address the concerns of Nigerians across different regions.
According to him, the PDP must take deliberate steps to restore confidence among its supporters by demonstrating clear leadership direction and internal stability. He noted that political parties perform better when members are aligned in vision and purpose, rather than divided by competing ambitions.
He added that the ongoing conversations within the PDP about restructuring and reform present an opportunity for the party to redefine its identity and reinforce its role as a major opposition force in the country. Wike said such efforts must be guided by discipline, accountability, and a commitment to long-term success.
Furthermore, he said political relevance is sustained through continuous engagement, strategic planning, and the willingness of members to put the collective interest of the party above personal considerations. He warned that failure to address internal challenges could weaken the party’s prospects in future elections.
The remarks come amid debates within the PDP regarding reconciliation, leadership direction, and strategic realignment ahead of upcoming political cycles. Party stakeholders have continued to engage in discussions aimed at strengthening unity and improving the party’s chances in future national contests.
Overall, Wike’s position reflects a growing call within the PDP for stability, cohesion, and renewed focus on building a stronger political platform capable of regaining public confidence and competing effectively at all levels of governance.
