Two Nigerian soldiers, CPL Innocent Joseph and L/CPL Jacob Gani, have been apprehended for their involvement in stealing armoured cables from the Dangote Refinery in Lagos. This refinery, owned by the Dangote Group, holds significant importance in Nigeria’s oil industry, being the largest single-train refinery globally with a capacity to process about 650,000 barrels per day.
The soldiers were caught in the act last Sunday during a routine search at the refinery’s main gate. Security personnel discovered them attempting to exit the facility with 897 armoured cables that had been cut to size. Upon interrogation, CPL Innocent Joseph and L/CPL Jacob Gani admitted to procuring the cables within the refinery premises with the assistance of an accomplice named Smart, who is currently evading arrest.
In response to the incident, military authorities swiftly took action, seizing the stolen cables and the soldiers’ vehicle as evidence. Both soldiers have been detained pending further investigation into the matter. This case highlights the importance of maintaining stringent security measures at critical infrastructure sites and underscores the need for accountability within the ranks of security personnel.
