Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, alongside his Special Adviser on Land Recovery, has been urged to launch an investigation into certain newly appointed members of the Executive Council. Specifically, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Johnclif Nwadike, and the Executive Secretary of the Imo State Education Management Board (SEMB), Mrs. Tina Azubuike, are accused of illegally selling and converting land belonging to Ara Secondary School for personal use.
An Imo-based newspaper journalist, Martin Opara, known for his controversial reporting, claims in a recent article that a group named the “Imo Democracy and Accountability Monitoring Group” (IDAMG) defended Nwadike and Azubuike. The group asserted that neither official was involved in the land sale at Ara Secondary School in Okuku Autonomous Community, Owerri West Local Government Area. Instead, they attributed the land transactions to the school’s authorities, noting that similar issues have been recurring since 2017.
Despite these denials, the local Okuku community remains adamant about reclaiming the school land. They have voiced strong opposition to any actions that undermine the school’s integrity and have pledged to restore the land regardless of any deceptive practices.
Additionally, there are serious accusations against Nwadike and Azubuike regarding the overall state of the Imo State education system. Critics argue that under their leadership, the system has deteriorated, with rampant extortion and policies detrimental to educational development.
A notable incident involves the former principal of Ara Secondary School, Miss Ogechi Amadi, who was allegedly removed from her position by Mrs. Azubuike for opposing the land sale. Instead of being reassigned to another school, she was transferred to the Owerri Zonal Education Management Board, effectively sidelining her.
Furthermore, there are concerns about the approval of a gas plant construction on the school premises, a decision attributed to the implicated officials. This raises additional questions about their prioritization of safety and educational values.
These allegations underscore the need for a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the truth and ensure accountability. Transparency and integrity in managing public educational resources are vital for maintaining public trust and upholding the standards of education in Imo State.
