…Governor warns against absentee leadership, insists on grassroots engagement

Governor Hope Uzodimma has reminded local government officials in Imo State that their mandate is to serve the people, not to punish them. Addressing participants at the third workshop for the 27 local government chairmen and councillors in the state, held at Rockview Hotel, Owerri, the governor emphasized the need for accountability, grassroots engagement, and genuine commitment to public service.
The three-day retreat, themed Public Sector Governance for Officials of Local Government in Imo State, was designed as a period of reflection and re-dedication to democratic values. Uzodimma told the council leaders that their election comes with a moral and legal obligation to improve the welfare of their constituents.
He called on chairmen to hold regular stakeholders’ meetings to ensure inclusivity and open communication with their communities. Councillors were urged to consult with ward leaders, traditional rulers, and town union presidents to identify and address local needs effectively.
The governor warned against absentee leadership, stating that any council chairman or councillor who fails to reside in their constituency risks having their office declared vacant. He added that security agencies have been instructed to monitor compliance with this directive.
Uzodimma urged the officials to see themselves as partners in progress with the state government, working to build a better Imo through transparency, accountability, and service-driven leadership.
