The families of six senior directors from the Federal Ministry of Defence are in distress after the officials were abducted along the Kabba Lokoja highway in Kogi State. The kidnappers have reportedly demanded N150 million for their release.
The victims are Mrs. Ngozi Ibeziakor, Mrs. C A Emeribe, Mrs. Helen Ezeakor, Mrs. C A Ladoye, Mrs. J A Onwuzurike, and Mrs. Catherine O Essien. They were travelling from Lagos to Abuja to participate in a scheduled director level promotion examination when they were intercepted. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attack was coordinated, leaving the officials vulnerable on the highway.
Family members who have been contacted by the abductors say the ransom demand is overwhelming and far beyond their capability. They appealed to authorities to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of the victims.
The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria condemned the abduction and expressed concern over the risks civil servants face while travelling long distances for official examinations. The union urged the government to decentralize such exercises to reduce exposure to security threats, especially on major highways.
Security operatives under the Ministry of Defence have reportedly begun searching suspected hideouts in Kogi State in an effort to rescue the abducted directors. Relevant agencies have also been encouraged to work closely together to ensure a swift and safe resolution.
The incident has further highlighted ongoing concerns about safety on Nigerian highways and the urgent need for improved security measures. As rescue efforts continue, the families and colleagues of the abducted officials remain hopeful for their safe return.
